I sank to the bottom while you rode the waves: An Open Letter To Marie Claire Re: Those Damn "Fatties" Making Out

To Maura Kelly,

First off, I understand you are entitled to your opinion however, what you wrote was a direct offense against human dignity. Your language is hurtful and downright kiddish. If you don’t want to see “[the character’s] rolls” change the channel or turn off your television. We don’t need you, as a “writer” (what you did wasn’t writing), discrimating against a group of people. You are calling their act of intimacy, disgusting because it makes you uncomfortable. Understand this discomfortable: its reality. We are not asking you to like or even accept but we are asking you to keep your degnating thoughts to yourself. How dare you pass off their weight has laziness, saying they can “change, if only they put their minds to it.” You don’t know their medical issues or mental problems. If you saw an anorexic women, would you say “she can eat if she wants to”. Obesity is not something you are “cool” with it is a part of our culture and it is a problem. However, for you to ask someone to hide it isn’t solving the problem. And I understand you trying to validate you ideals by citing your “plumper” friends but, at the same time to say you find it “displeasing” to watch a fat person “walk across the room”, honey, its down right mean. Because you believe the most obese people have “control” of their weight doesn’t mean they do. Do you think these people choose to put their health at risk? You give them credit for going to over eaters anonymous… well for them thats a big step. You also go on to compare you obesity to drunkness and drug abuse, how dare you? Yes, all three are problems in your society and they are addictions but you are comparing the level of “disgustingness” of a fat person walking across the room to a druggie passed out in a chair. Do you see the problem? Thanks for the advice to the characters on how to lose weight but, it is just done so you don’t have to see them anymore. I understand your history with eating disorders but, wouldn’t you understand the difficulty of weight more and have more dignity when speaking of it. Yes to be honest I would be uncomfortable too but to write an article telling people they should think about hiding themselves because of this discomfortable is a problem. You are offended by their act. Switch your channel if you don’t want to see it but, don’t you dare ask if two overweight people kissing is offensive (which the definition to is: causing resentful displeasure; highly irritating, angering, or annoying).
